Join the Aashna Counselling & Psychotherapy community for our Aashna+ screening of Who I Am Not, on Friday 7 February 2025 6 - 8.30 pm, a documentary that has only been screened briefly before in the UK at BFI Flare 2023.

Who I Am Not is a documentary exploring beauty queen Sharon-Rose Khumalo & activist Dimakatso Sebidi's parallel, yet divergent stories offering an intimate look at the struggle of living in a male-female world, when you are born in-between.

In a world unaware of the existence of intersex individuals, Dimakatso survived genital mutilation as a child. At the same time, Sharon, a beauty queen, uncovered her hidden male genetics at the age of 21.

As they navigate together the complexities of their identities and challenge deep-rooted societal taboos, their intertwined stories reveal the resilience and beauty of intersex lives hidden in plain sight.

Since organising the screening, the Aashna community have learnt of the sad loss of Dimakatso.  Read tributes and learn about Dimakatso's life-long mission to end the harmful practices of intersex genital mutilation (IGM) and to advocate for the dignity, autonomy, and celebration of intersex people in the article LGBTIQ+ Community Mourns Intersex Activist Dimakatso “Garfield” Sebidi and their article Diary of a proud intersex person

Aashna will light a candle and hold space for commemoration and a brief discussion of Who I Am Not following the screening.

The £8 fee includes a donation to the Who I Am Not Social Impact Campaign:

Our social impact campaign is dedicated to creating in South Africa a summer camp for intersex and LGBTQ children and their parents. The goal is to help the entire family to understand each other, as ignorance and fear are their worst enemies. Children don't understand what's happening to them, are bullied, and parents are not the safeguard they need, as they are ignorant to the cause, too. We want to create real communities, to help them understand that they are not alone.

Whatever donation you might be able to raise for that cause, initiated by Dimakatso Sebidi will be deeply appreciated. It would go directly to their foundation in SA, called Power of Four.
